Why Block Paving Fails โ€” and How a Proper Layer Prevents It

Every street in England has one: the block-paved driveway with two sunken wheel tracks, a puddle by the garage door and grass growing through the joints. None of that is the fault of the blocks. Concrete pavers are practically indestructible โ€” what fails is the preparation underneath, and it fails because block paving looks deceptively easy to lay. The difference between a drive that stays flat for twenty years and one that ruts in three is decided before a single block is placed: in the depth of the dig, the compaction of the sub-base and the discipline of the screeded laying course.

The build-up a lasting block drive needs

A driveway carrying cars needs 200-250mm of excavation: 100-150mm of MOT Type 1 compacted in layers with a plate or roller, a 30-40mm screeded bed of sharp grit sand โ€” never building sand, which holds water and washes out โ€” and then the 50 or 60mm blocks themselves, laid to falls of at least 1:80 so water sheds to a drain or border rather than sitting mid-drive. Edge courses go down first on a concrete haunch; without a restrained edge the whole field of blocks migrates outward under traffic and joints open everywhere. Kiln-dried sand vibrated into the joints locks the surface into a single load-spreading mat.

Patterns are structure, not just style

Herringbone at 45 or 90 degrees is the strongest bond for vehicle areas because no joint line runs straight under a wheel. Stretcher bond suits paths and patios; basketweave is best kept to pedestrian areas. Tegula-style tumbled blocks give a softer, aged look and hide wear well. A good layer will tell you which bonds belong where โ€” and will cut border details around manholes with a splitter or saw, not fill the gaps with mortar.

Relaying beats replacing more often than you would think

Sunken tracks and open joints usually mean a failed bed, not failed blocks. The same blocks can be lifted, the base rebuilt and everything relaid โ€” often indistinguishable from new at well under replacement cost. ๐Ÿงฑ

Full-Depth Preparation

Excavation to 200-250mm, Type 1 compacted in layers, grit-sand screed โ€” the invisible work that keeps a drive flat.

๐Ÿ“

Structural Laying Patterns

Herringbone for drives, stretcher for paths, tumbled tegula for character โ€” bonds chosen for load, not just looks.

๐Ÿ”’

Concrete-Haunched Edges

Every edge course set on concrete before the field is laid โ€” the restraint that stops blocks creeping and joints opening.
